Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a new technique that involves topical application of a photosensitising chemical – aminolevulinic acid (ALA) to your face for one to three hours followed by exposure to a special red light or intense pulse light (IPL). During the light exposure, oxidizing chemicals are generated resulting in destruction of sun damaged cells. As a result your skin will look smoother and more youthful.

Photodynamic Therapy involves three simple steps:

  1. Cleansing of the face with alcohol wipes to remove oil and dirt.
  2. Topical application of the ALA cream to the face for one to three hours.
  3. Treat the face with IPL or special red light.

When exposed to the special red light or IPL, the chemical in the cream is activated and destroys sun damaged skin cells.

PDT can be used to treat Sunspots, early skin cancers, acne, sun damaged skin, and uneven skin tone and texture. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sun light. The most popular areas to be treated are the face, chest and back of the hands. PDT has several advantages over conventional laser treatment including

  • Effective in treating sun damaged skin and sunspots
  • Excellent cosmetic results
  • Being a non-invasive procedure
  • Ability to return to normal activities after 24 hours
  • No restrictions from exercise and sport, ideal for those with an active lifestyle
