Successfully treating acne scars is a major challenge for doctors who practice aesthetic medicine. To the patient, scars from acne can be just as physically and emotionally traumatic as active acne. Old ways to get rid of acne scars involved harsh dermabrasion, deep chemical peels and CO2 laser resurfacing, all of which have a significant downtime. New techniques such as subcision, Fractional Laser Therapy, intralesional injections and dermal fillers, are more effective and require little downtime. Injections are best used for dish-like acne scars or scars that can be easily stretched out. The more mature and supple the scar, the better the results. Due to the localised trauma from injections, the body produces some collagen, therefore the scars treated become less deep after the first injection.
Intralesional corticosteroids have been used to treat scars since the mid-1960’s and are a first-line therapy for keloids or raised lumpy scars. Commonly, the injection is performed at four to six week intervals. The steroid works by reducing and flattening the scar.
